Ni Hao,
This is my first blog since arriving in China. It has been a busy week with many new and exciting adventures. We spent one night in Hong Kong and then took the ferry to Zhuhai. By the time we reached Zhuhai we had already experienced all forms of transportation: Plane, Bus, Train, Ferry and Taxibus. Some of us (me) got a little seasick on the Ferry ride over to Zhuhai. Lots of water traffic and waves but what a beautiful sight the South China Sea was!! It is only a short distance from our hotel.
Officially, we are in Zhuhai, in the Province of Guongdong.
Our Zhuhai Jinan 'buddies' are incredible!! They are so polite and respectful and accomodating our every need. All the people we have met thus far have shown nothing but kindness towards us. These are very kind and gentle people who appreciate everything!
I am reminded often how wasteful we can be back home. We take so much for granted but I will leave that for another blog. For now I want you to experience a few of the five senses with me.
As we walked through downtown last night we were overwhelmed with the smell of Magnolias. When you close your eyes and stand there you would have thought you were in the middle of a large Magnolia garden. The aroma was so strong!! Walking to school each day you are struck by the hanging Mangos in the trees above! And there is one tree in particular that has huge red flowers on it but I will have to get back to you on the type of tree. I guess they call it a Phoenix.
Our tastse buds have experienced numerous explosions of spices, textures, and flavors - some very good and some not so good :-)....the chicken head (complete) was a little surprising when we were served our dinner and it came on the plate propped proudly in the center of the meal!! Our hosts took us out to a very nice restaurant on Thursday which served us dozens of varying courses of dishes inlcuding clams, cow tongue, pork, shrimp, beef, fruits and veggies and desserts. It was great!!! We learned what many of the meals stood for and meant in their tradition.
Much more to come but we're off for a weekend adventure (every moment is truly an adveture)...more to come!
